FOUR THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE STADIUM COURSE AT TPC SCOTTSDALE

The PGA Tour continues its West Coast swing this week when it heads to Arizona for the Waste Management Phoenix Open. The event, which is also known as ”The Greatest Show on Grass”, has been held at the Stadium Course at TPC Scottsdale since 1987. Here’s everything you need to know about one of the most fan-friendly courses on the Tour schedule.

The origin of the course: The PGA Tour commissioned course designers Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish to build a new course to host the Phoenix Open that was similar to that of the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, the home of the Players Championship. The goal was that every spectator at the event could have a good view of the tournament. Thus, in 1986, the Stadium Course at TPC Scottsdale opened for business. The following year, it began hosting the Phoenix Open and has so for over 30 years.

The design of the course: The par-71, desert-style course runs 7,266 yards from the championship tees and offers golfers four different tees to use. The championship black tees, the players blue tees, the resort white tees, and the forward red tees are all available to players at the Stadium Course, which has three par-5’s and four par-3’s. The course features forgiving fairways, considerably large greens which run fast, and over 70 bunkers that are strategically placed in the fairways and around the greens. The fairways and greens are both made from TiffDwarf grass. Another intriguing component to the course is the role of water, which comes into play on six of the course’s holes.

Longest holes on the course: The par-5 third and 13th holes both run 558 yards from the championship tees.

Shortest hole on the course: The iconic par-3 16th hole runs 163 yards from the championship tees. We’ll have more on this famous hole later this week.

Ball Speed = Distance!

Most golfers are interested in their swing speed. The harder we swing, the farther the ball will go, right? WRONG! Ball speed is the number we want to pay attention to. You can achieve more distance by striking the ball solid, making the ball take off faster from the club face, resulting in more distance! Every mile/hour of ball speed can result in roughly 3 yards. A mis-hit with a driver can take away 10 miles/hour of ball speed versus a solid strike. That means a mis-hit can mean the difference of up to 30 yards!!

Next time you play, try swinging with a smooth rhythm, focusing your eyes on a small spot on the golf ball. This will increase your focus, creating better contact and more distance! Good luck and play well!

It’s Fun Fact Friday!

Who Knew??

Golf has actually been played on the moon! It is only 1 of 2 sports to literally have been played out-of-this-world, along with the javelin throw. Back in 1971, Apollo 14 astronaut, Alan Shepard, swung a one-handed shot with a six-iron, which was all his pressure suit would allow.

Tell us the most unusual place you have played golf!

Windy Days Are Fun!

Hello Golfers!

A message from Adam Miller, Teaching Professional at Kingsway Country Club. As anyone has seen in the last month or so, it is windy here in SW Florida during the winter months! This can be a really fun challenge and I want to talk about your mindset when going days when that wind is gusting!

Remember these words, “Golf is a challenge, not a chore.”

This game is recreational, and if you look at adverse weather conditions as a new challenge, rather than a daunting task, you will learn to love the game even more. The best players in the history of the game have always thrived in the worst of conditions because they believe they have already beaten half of the field, just by having a positive outlook on the day.

Next time you’re scheduled to play on one of these blustery days, embrace the day and have some fun! Good luck and play well!

Tiger will be back trying to tame Torrey Pines this week! – Can he do it?

Expectations are back, which means so is Tiger Woods

LA JOLLA, Calif. — It’s winning time for Tiger Woods again.

A year ago, there was rampant uncertainty for Woods, who was coming off a fourth back surgery and wasn’t sure how many golf tournaments he’d be able to play, let alone finish or even win. Now there are expectations.

A year ago, Woods stood at 656th in the Official World Golf Rankings. When he plays in Thursday’s opening round of the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in his first tournament since September, Woods will walk to the tee ranked 13th in the world having won his last start, the 2018 Tour Championship.

A year ago, baby steps were more than acceptable for Woods, who found himself satisfied with gradual progress and so-so results. Now, winning is all that matters again for Woods — just the way it used to be for the player who has won 80 times in his career and glared at you if you had the gall to ask him before a tournament what his expectations were for that particular week.

Woods no longer carries that arrogant edge he used to, at least not publicly. He’s been humbled both by his physical ailments and thoughts of never being able to compete again. And, by the way, he’s been embraced by the fans during his comeback from a real-life abyss.

But make no mistake: At age 43, and with the window slowly closing, Woods knows he’s got to win now while he’s healthy.

“There is some momentum from last year because there’s a better understanding of what I can do,’’ Woods said Tuesday after playing a 10-hole practice round with Jordan Spieth. “Going into this event last year, I really didn’t know. And the fact that I was able to get through, I didn’t have any zinging down my leg like I did before, I didn’t have any problems at night recovering for the next day, even though I finished 30th or 25th, whatever the hell I finished [23rd], those were big accomplishments for me.

“Now, this year it’s totally different. I know what I can do, I know what I’m feeling. So now it’s about finishing a little bit better and winning some events this year.’’

Woods has competed at Torrey Pines 17 times. He has seven wins and a dozen top-10 finishes. His last win at Torrey Pines came in 2013. His 14th and last major championship victory came at Torrey Pines in the 2008 U.S. Open.

Woods will play the first two rounds with Tony Finau and Xander Schauffele, beginning on the South course Thursday at 1:40 p.m. (Eastern time) and then the North course on Friday at 12:30 p.m.

Four months removed from his stirring win at the Tour Championship in Atlanta, where the fans surrounded him like the pied piper on the 72nd hole, Woods is still energized by the emotions of the moment as much as it being his 80th career victory.

It’s Fun Fact Friday!

Who Knew??

The first ever golf balls were made of thin leather, stuffed with goose feathers. ‘Feather balls’ were used up until 1848, when they were replaced with the ‘Guttie’ ball, named for the rubber-like sap of the Gutta tree, found in the tropics.

What is your favorite golf ball to play with?

THOMPSON COMES FROM 4 BACK TO WIN KINGSWAY SENIOR

Pat Thompson (Asheville, N.C.) shot a final-round 70 to erase a four-shot deficit and win the Kingsway Senior Invitational at Kingsway Country Club.

It was Thompson’s first national senior win since last year’s Chanticleer Senior Invitational.

Ken Kinkopf (Dublin, Ohio) led after the first two days with rounds of 69-74 but fell to a third-place tie with Terry Werner (Dyer, Ind.) with a 76 on the final day.

That left the title chase up to Thompson and Scott Smith (Houston, Texas), who each started the day four shots back. In the end, Thompson’s 70 edged Smith’s 71 and gave Thompson the win.

Rokki Rogan (Fort Myers, Fla.) shot the low round of the day, a 69, to round out the top five.

The defending champion Steve Humphrey (Lexington, Ky.) finished 18th.

SUPER SENIOR DIVISION

Paul Schlachter overcame an opening 77 with rounds of 69-67 to win by two shots over John Armstrong, who closed with a 68. Bill Everett, Bill Zylstra and Ian Harris finished thrid through fifth.

LEGENDS DIVISION

John Cuomo rode an opening-round 68 to a three-shot win over John Blank. Berger Warner was third, seven shots back.

SUPER LEGENDS DIVISION

Charlie Busbee shot a final-round 70 to come from three shots back and overtake Walt Martin by one shot. It was a two-man race, with Martin clearing the third-place finisher by seven shots.
